Critics pick Portman, ‘La La Land’

-

La La Land went into the Critics Choice Awards with the most number of nominations. It went home with the most wins with eight including Best Picture. Moonlight, which went into the night with 10 nominations, bagged Best Acting Ensemble. Their respective wins solidify La La Land and Moonlight’s Oscar chances. La La Land also won Best Director Honors for Damien Chazelle. Moonlight stars Trevante Rhodes, Andre Holland, Janelle Monae, Ashton Sanders, Jharrel Jerome, Naomie Harris and Mahersala Ali. The film comes from Brad Pitt’s Oscar-winning company Plan B Entertainment. “We sincerely appreciate this… It’s just really been an amazing experience, just a wonderful journey, and thank you for recognizing our work. I appreciate it,” said Ali, who also won Best Supporting Actor.

Host TJ Miller, who was arrested just two days before over an argument about presidentelect Donald Trump, teased the audience, saying he would address “the elephant in the room.” But he joked about something else and ended the show without ever mentioning his arrest.

The Silicon Valley star did have a lot to say against Trump, like: “Hey, trolls did well this year — not the movie, but dudes on the internet. One of them got elected president.”

Miller, according to TMZ, was arrested dawn of Friday for allegedly slapping an Uber driver while they argued about Trump. He was released on bail.
