Senior citizen

- LINDA GRACE CARIñO

IWAS quite young when I learned that the power of the mind is awesome. It must have been in my early twenties when I began experimenting with mind over matter, and proving over and over and over that, indeed, mind triumphs over matter.

One of the areas I experimented with was this point of controlling how one looks from the mental. I followed steps given by my gurus of the era to effect how I chose my skin, hair, and the rest of my physical persona to look, this quite successfully. I even controlled my weight that way.

I suppose it was only natural, that when I turned 30, I determined that I would begin counting backwards till I reached 20. So for the next decade, my age was always between 20 and 30.

My body cooperated, a body does what it is mentally told to do. When my earth age was the good, ol’ 40, of course I began counting backwards again, and so on and likewise when I hit 50. Hahaha.

In earth time, however, I am less than a year away from qualifying for a senior citizen’s card. My mother, who is 81, has one of them, and I see its benefits. I even enjoyed some of them just recently.

One evening this past week, I was at that mall on the hill getting groceries done. I suddenly felt dizzy, probably because I hadn’t eaten a proper lunch. So I proceeded to sit at the seniors’ bench at the seniors’ lane, tried not to succumb to the dizziness, and requested a customer assistant to get me a sack of rice and some other items I couldn’t walk to anymore, explaining that I was simply too woozy to move much.

The said assistant was very helpful, got me said items, asked the cashier of the senior lane to allow me to check out there even if, as I took pains to explain, I wasn’t quite yet 60 (ahem), rolled my cart to the head of the taxi line, explaining to those who manned it that “Nahihilo si Ma’am,” and got me into a cab and thus just five minutes away from home, that place where you can be as out of sorts as you like and all remains well. Where I reflected that yeah, the body does as your mind tells it to, but some days, the senior label... maaaeeen, it can be welcome. Teehee.

To life!--
