Wakee’s boxers try luck in Russia after stablemate’s loss

-

ADONES Aguelo and Marco Demecillo attempt to get a win for the Philippines on the road as they both see action in Russia this weekend.

Aguelo is gunning for the vacant World Boxing Council (WBC) Asian Boxing Council (ABC) lightweight title against undefeated Russian Pavel Malikov on Dec. 17 at the Ekaterinburg Expo in Ekaterinburg.

The 28-year-old Aguelo is on a three-fight winning streak, all three by knockouts. After a unanimous decision loss to Miguel Marriaga in his first fight this year, Aguelo bounced back with knockout wins over Bryan Samson, experienced Richard Betos and Rodel Wenceslao.

Aguelo is no stranger to fighting on enemy soil because he has already fought outside the country 14 times in the US, Mexico, Australia, Japan, Thailand and Indonesia.

The 30-year-old Malikov is the current WBC ABC Silver lightweight king. His last two fights were stoppage wins against Filipino fighters. He scored a third round stoppage over Leonardo Donorio in July and stopped Carlo Magali in the eighth round just last month.

Aguelo is 27-14-2 with 19 knockouts, while Malikov is 9-0 with three knockouts.

Demecillo, on the other hand, is fighting undefeated Russian prospect Valerey Tretykov in an eight-rounder.

Demecillo is on a comeback trail after losing three of his last five contests. He is coming off a confidence-boosting victory over former Pan Asian Boxing Association (PABA) champion Marvin Tampus, who he knocked out in six rounds in September.

Tretykov just had one fight this year, a lopsided unanimous decision over Argentinian journeyman Diego Sananco in April.

The 26-year-old Demecillo is 22-5-1 with 17 knockouts, while Tretykov is 7-0 with three knockouts.

Aguelo and Demecillo’s stablemate at the Rex Wakee Salud Gym in Labangon, Neil John Tabanao, just came off a unanimous decision defeat in Russia last weekend.

Aguelo and Demecillo are set to leave for Russia tomorrow along with trainer Fernando Ocon and Ryan Salud.
