Best of 2016: Lip products

- BY JOANNA CUENCO

Last week’s column was the first in a series of my personal bests for 2016 when it comes to beauty. I’ve mentioned skin care, powder and highlighter. Since lipstick is everyone’s favorite, and it’s too difficult to mention just one, today’s all about the best lip products that I started using this year.

• Colourpop Ultra Satin Lip liquid lipstick Liquid lipsticks have been all the rage in the past couple of years, and there is no end in sight just yet for this lipstick formula. Mattes still dominate the liquid lipstick world, but many quickly found them to be too uncomfortably dry to wear. Enter the satin liquid lipstick, done so well and priced just as nicely by Colourpop Cosmetics. It’s almost as long-wearing as its matte sister, but without the flat finish and desert-dry feel. As with its other lip product varieties, Colourpop has dozens of Ultra Satin shades. The one shown here is Frick ‘n Frack, a medium brown I was not expecting to like, but turned out to be one of my most-worn lippies from Colourpop.

• Kylie lip kits Continuing on the train of thought on liquid lipsticks, I’m sure no beauty junkie remains unfamiliar with the Kylie lip kits by Kylie Jenner. I have no interest whatsoever in keeping up with the Kardashians, but after hearing that the lip kits are actually of good quality and not just hype, I had to try it myself. I ended up liking both the liquid lipstick and lipliner so much that I now have the kits in several colors. Be warned that some shades unfortunately do not perform as well as others. My favorite is Mary Jo K, a beautiful classic red. Posie K and Kirsten are more wearable for those who are afraid of bold lips, but on me, these two colors have more tendency to patch and dry out the lips than Mary Jo K does.

• Flormar matte lipstick If you read this page regularly, you’ll know this is not my first mention of this lipstick that I discovered in the beauty section of SM Seaside City. If it is your first time to read about this lipstick, do check out my blog instead for a full review and swatches of three colors. It is an affordable matte lipstick that is not drying and has good staying power; one of my most reached-for lipsticks this year. • Etude House Berry Delicious On the opposite end of the spectrum of textures, we go from matte to gloss. The packaging is very cute, typical of K-beauty brands. It looks like a bullet of lipstick in a clear tube, but is really a tube of lip gloss. If you like juicy-looking lips, this is a lip gloss that is almost as pigmented as a liquid lipstick, except that the color is still pretty translucent and not opaque like a lipstick.

• Chanel Rouge Coco Stylo Complete Care Lip Shine The product comes in a long, elongated tube for sleek and easy touch-ups. It’s marketed as being as shiny as a gloss, as pigmented as a lipstick, and as comforting as a lip balm, and for me, it lives up to each claim. I also have a full review on my blog about this in two shades if you want to know more.
