PSC taps Sy as Visayas coordinator

SPORTSMAN Lorenzo “Chao” Sy has joined the group of Cebuano sports leaders who are now part of the Philippine Sports Commission (PSC).

Upon the recommendation of Commissioner Ramon Fernandez, PSC Chairman William named Sy as the PSC regional coordinator for the Philippine Institute of Sports for the Visayas.

The appointment was supposed to start on Oct. 1 but Sy only received it last Thursday.

However, Fernandez and Ramirez assured him that the date does not matter, since his post still has to exist because the PIS Visayas is yet to start by January.

“I was told by Commissioner Fernandez and Chairman Ramirez that it was only a typographical error. My appointment will begin as soon as the contract that they sent me will reach the PSC office in Manila. It’s a tough job. But I am willing to extend my help for the sake of our untapped athletes in the countryside,” Sy told Sun.Star Cebu.

Sy will report directly to Fernandez and will coordinate with PIS national raining director Marc Velasco from time to time once the entire program will take off next year.

“I worked with Chao since my college days in (University of) San Carlos as our team manager in their La Fortuna bakery team. I know his passion and involvement in sports and I know he can help the PSC in our grassroots programs here in the Visayas area. I know he also has a stable of boxers who are deserving of a second look among the other talents here in the area,” said Fernandez.

Sy joins lawyer Ramsey Quijano, who was earlier appointed as PSC Regional Coordinator for Region 7 and Sheldon Vincent Kintanar, who is the executive assistant of Fernandez as the Cebuano sportsmen in the PSC.

“Basically (their jobs are the) same but Chairman Butch utilizes Ramsey as legal consultant, too, especially in relation to the arbitration committee of the PSC. (The) same (with Sy and Quijano) in the sense that they help me with the programs here, conceptualization and the likes,” said Fernandez.

Among the functions Sy has to perform is to coordinate with LGUs, scout for possible training centers, scout for talents, file monthly report of the progress of his works to the chairman, Fernandez and Velasco. RCM
