Staying fit through the holidays: Part 2

- BY PIO SOLON (piogerardsolon@yahoo.com)

This is part two of how to stay fit through the holiday season, and these are tips we actually do.

1. Place your gym gear in the car—we experience heavy traffic every day now. What I want to do after work is to go home, get my gear and go to the gym. But if I do that, I will not have any energy left for my workouts. Get ready the night before by having your gear in your car ready to train for the next day. That way, you’re saving on time and unnecessary stress on the road.

2. Take note of spots to exercise in the city. Sometimes, we just can’t get home on time. Other times there's too much traffic to head home and you’re better off walking around in the mall or staying somewhere waiting for the traffic to subside. Another suggestion is to use that time waiting to get some exercise in. There are some spots in the city where we can exercise: 1) the running path in Cebu Business Park 2) IT Park 3) Family Park in Talamban 4) University of San Carlos – Talamban Campus for San Carlos students, among others. I’m probably just scraping the tip of exercise spots in the city, not to mention various gyms and fitness centers.

3. Green Tea. I’ve long advocated for people to consume more of this healthy beverage. The benefits are practically endless: decreased stress, improved immune system, lowers cholesterol, increases insulin sensitivity, aids in digestion and metabolism etc. I’ve long been enamored about Asian cultures having tea after meals. It seems like cultures who drink green tea have better life expectancy.

4. Get some sleep. We understand that during the excitement of the season, we all tend to sleep beyond our normal bedtimes. But please note, sleep deprivation can actually lead to more stress, sickness and health problems. Good health starts with good food, movement and a restful night of sleep.

5. Cut yourself some slack. It’s understandable to miss a few training sessions but what’s also important is to get back on the saddle quickly. Don’t worry too much about being perfect, but focus on trying to get as much exercise during this season as well.
