TO guard the city’s coastal areas, the City Government of Naga, Cebu has built a lighthouse on its baywalk area.

The P6-million, threestorey lighthouse, which also serves as headquarters of the City of Naga’s Philippine Coast Guard detachment, has become a new attraction in the city.

Engr. Arthur Villamor, City of Naga administrator, told Sun.Star Cebu that the lighthouse was among the 10 infrastructure projects initiated during the last term of former Mayor Valdemar Chiong.

After Chiong ended his term last July, his daughter, Mayor Kristine Vanessa Chiong, continued these projects.

The lighthouse, along with other infrastructure projects initiated by the former mayor, were inaugurated during the city’s 9th Charter Day celebration earlier this year.

Before its inauguration, the younger Chiong and PCG officials signed an agreement for its use in a usufruct capacity last October.

Bay area

Villamor said that with the city’s bay area now serving as a berth for large and small vessels, the lighthouse is greatly needed.

“Kinahanglan kaayo ang lighthouse kay mao man gud na ang mobantay sa atong kadagatan. Dali sad magayran ang mga vessels padung sa atong siyudad para modunggo (The lighthouse is important in guarding our sea. It will guide vessels that will dock in our ports),” Villamor said.

Beam

The lighthouse’s beam can be seen from as far as Talisay City, he said.

Aside from the lighthouse, the City government also constructed a wharf for vessels owned by the PCG.

Before the construction of the lighthouse, the city’s PCG detachment held office in a two-storey building at the back of City Hall in Barangay South Poblacion.
