SWU, UV bag titles

SWU rules women’s beach volleyball; UV stuns defending champion USJ-R in men’s division

THE Southweste­rn University (SWU) Lady Cobras yet again dominated the sand after winning the women’s division title of the Cebu Schools Athletic Foundation Inc. (Cesafi) beach volleyball tournament for the fourth time.

The trio of Therese Rae Ramas, Floremel Rodriguez and Janelle Cabahug bagged the women’s division crown after a closely-contested three-set victory over University of San Jose-Recoletos (USJ-R) yesterday at the Aznar Coliseum beach volleyball court, 27-22, 22-24, 15-10.

Ramas was named MVP, while her partner Rodriguez won the Best Attacker plum. USJ-R’s Paula Maninang snagged the Best Receiver award.

SWU also won the girls division title after beating University of Southern Philippine­s Foundation (USPF) in two sets, 21-18, 21-17. SWU’s Crisley Sucalit was named the division’s MVP.

On the other hand, the University of the Visayas (UV), scored a huge upset after dethroning defending Men’s Open champion USJ-R.

John Juban and Jojo Noval swept the USJ-R trio of Alastair Gairanod, Kent Verbosidad and RA Tecson in two sets, 22-20, 21-18. Juban took the MVP honors, while his partner won the Best Attacker award. Verbosidad won the Best Receiver award.

The University of Cebu (UC) also defeated University of Samn Carlos (USC) in the Boys division, 27-25, 21-14 with UC’s Joshua Sillos earning the MVP.
