-

TWO men were killed after a van hit the motorcycle they were riding in Barangay Pakigne, Minglanilla, Cebu before dawn yesterday.

Carl Dave Alvial, 23, was driving his motorcycle with Bryan Dominick Abella, 21, as his passenger when they met the accident at 2:30 a.m. They were about to exit from a subdivision when the van allegedly hit the motorcycle.

PO2 Evie Espina of the Minglanilla Police Station said that van driver Benjie Cauntod, 29, surrendered to the police for investigation.

Espina said that Cauntod was on his way to Cebu City and while traveling in Pakigne, he attempted to overtake a car by encroaching on the opposite lane.

Cauntod was reportedly driving at a speed of 80 kilometers per hour when he tried to overtake the car. He, however, failed to notice the motorcycle, which was crossing the highway.

Alvial and Abella were rushed to the Minglanilla District Hospital. However, because of the severe injuries they suffered, the two died before reaching the hospital.

Espina, who is investigating the accident, told Sun.Star Cebu that Alvial and Abella just came from a basketball game where their team won the championship spot.

Espina said that both men were on their way home after attending the victory party when they met the tragedy.
