Weiwei Gao wins second straight Cebu Country Club Junior Open Championsh­ips title

WEIWEI Gao ruled the 2016 Country Club Junior Open Championsh­ips, winning his second straight title in the event yesterday at the Cebu Country Club (CCC) in Banilad, Cebu City.

Gao topped the Class A division, which is for junior golfers aged 15 to 17. The varsity team golfer for University of Virginia scored a par 72 in the first round and had a 1-under 71 in the second round to finish with 143.

“It feels great to win backto-back. My game was good for this tournament but I still had many things to fix, I missed some putts. I can still work on it before I go back to the US,” said Gao, who tallied five birdies against two bogeys in the first round.

Gao, 17, played steadily in the second round with five birdies en route to scoring oneunder par.

Winners

Peter Tyler Po nabbed the first runner-up award with 148 (73-75), while Wei Yu Gao got third place with 154 (75-79).

Riko Nagai reigned in the Class A girls’ division after scoring 165 (76-89), beating Nicole Ong Oh 230 (107-123), while in Class B, Joaquin Velez won the boys 13-14 bracket after shooting 77 in both days for a 154. He beat Bregente Rolando Jr. 159 (80,79) and Coby Co 199 (98, 101).

Weiwei’s younger sister Weifang Gao also topped the Class B girls’ division with 178 (85, 93) over Jordan Paige Ouano 210 (103, 107).

In the special division, Julius Pierre Neri won the title with 158 (80, 78), beating Martin Mendoza 159 (81, 78) and Harvey Sytiongsa 164 (78, 86).

In Class C, Brian Choi and Jelena Villordon bagged the boys’ and girls’ titles. Choi scored 191 (99, 92) in the 11 to 12 years old bracket, while Villordon had 226 (115, 111).

Tatsuyoshi Ochiai finished with 194 (95, 99) and Vince Ong Oh had 213 (109, 104) to take first and second runners-up in the boys’ class, while Caitlin Daniella Go settled for first runner-up in the girls’ division.

Jacob Victor Cajita won the boys’ Class D title with 174 (92, 82), capping his day with an an ace in hole No. 5. Ren Moromasa took first runner-up after scoring 195 (99, 96) and Cliff Richard Nuneza bagged second runner-up with 196 (99-97).

Nine-year-old Grace Quintanill­a, who’s preparing for the Philippine Amateur Ladies Open at the Wack Wack Golf and Country Club in January, won the girl’s division with 166 (84, 82) beating Ashley Llena.

Clement Ordeneza and Ariana Gonzalez won the boys’ and girls’ Class E, which is for 8-under golfers, and covered 18 holes for two days.

Ordeneza scored 91 (47, 44), to beat Jun Ochiai 93 (48, 45) and Daniel Carl Go 101 (50, 51). Gonzalez had 142 (68, 74) and beat up Angeli Sarmiento 195 (80, 115).
