NINETEEN families in Sitio Tunga, Barangay Tanke in Talisay City, Cebu lost their homes after a late night fire hit their village last Tuesday.

A re-blocking in the area was recommended after the incident, as narrow roads reportedly prevented fire trucks from penetrating to the fire scene.

The fire, which occurred at 9:40 p.m., reportedly started at the house of 71-year-old Isidoro Gesalatan.

SFO2 Rodolfo Luage, an investigator of the Talisay City Fire Department, said that an unattended oil lamp reportedly started the fire.

It took firefighters an hour to control the fire; fire out was declared at 11:05 p.m.

Task Force Alpha was declared to allow the local fire department to seek help from nearby localities.

Luage said that if not for the heavy rain last Tuesday night, the fire might have spread to the other areas in the village.

Damage to property was pegged at P300,000.

No one was reported hurt during the incident.

The Talisay City Social Welfare Office (CSWO) provided food and clothing to the survivors.

Felipa Solana, head of the CSWO, told reporters that the City will provide P10,000 assistance to the homeowners to help them rebuild their houses.

Solana said that the City has yet to assess how much they will be providing to house renters affected by the fire.

In a separate interview, Barangay Tanke Chief Perla Cabanes told Sun. Star Cebu that after the incident she saw the need to re-block the area.

Cabanes said she plans to ask the City to implement the re-blocking and will also convince the affected residents to cooperate.

Some of the survivors were temporarily sheltered in the Barangay Day Care Center, while some of them opted to stay with their relatives.
