-

SM Malls in the Visayas unite with the movement on Philippine Initiative on Zero Hunger, a collaborative effort to engage all people’s organizations and various sectors for greater involvement and broader participation in arresting hunger problems in the Philippines.

Philippine Initiative on Zero Hunger launched its drive in November 2016 at the University of San Carlos-Talamban Campus, with speakers Dr. Mario Capanzana, director of the Food and Nutrition Research Institute; Armando Parawan, health and nutrition adviser of the Save the Children; and Secretary Jesus Dureza of the Office of the Presidential Adviser on the Peace Process.

Hunger, according to the Manila– based Stop Hunger Now-Philippines, is a serious health concern, which causes death mostly to children under five years old in the Philippines, to being underweight as a result of malnutrition.

SHNP cited the increasing number of Filipinos experiencing hunger in the last 15 years. It noted on Social Weather Station report that found 18.3 percent or around 21 million Filipinos rating themselves to have experienced hunger in 2014, a big jump from just 8.3 percent in 1999.

SM Seaside City Cebu and SM City Cebu support the campaign, in partnership with the Save the Children and the United Nations International Children Emergency Fund (Unicef) .
