Suba kicks off fiesta celebration with 3rd Tuslob-Buwa Festival
Barangay prepared 25,000 puso or hanging rice for their visitors The festival attracted 8,000 to 10,000 individuals
BARANGAY Suba in Cebu City held their third Tuslob- Buwa Festival last Jan. 5, which was one of the activities scheduled leading to the village’s annual fiesta. The festival started around 4 p. m. The residents stationed themselves on the 250 tables placed on the street as they prepared the exotic dish.
Tuslob-buwa is a street food made from pig brain, pork liver or intestines, oil, soy sauce or fish sauce and other seasonings.
Tuslob- buwa literally means “to dip into bubbles, which is what the stew looks like as it simmer.
During the festival, the barangay gave 25,000 puso or hanging rice and the tuslob- buwa ingredients to the residents for free.
Barangay officials said the event attracted an estimated 8,000 to 10,000 individuals.
The visitors enjoyed hopping from one table to the other to taste differently cooked tuslob- buwa. Some tables prepared a spicy dish. Suba Barangay Captain Joel Sable said the essence of the festival was to unite the people in their village and to honor their patron saint, Señor Sto. Niño.
The residents of the barangay welcomed the continuation of the annual festival, saying it is a way for them to get acquainted with the new people coming to their village.
The barangay first held the festival in 2015.
The activity is usually held nine days before Suba’s fiesta day, which is the same day as that of the Sinulog festival.
Vice Mayor Edgardo Labella was one of the many officials who graced the event.
“If you look at this festival, it is simple but the real essence of this is unity,” he said.
Sable said they intend to continue holding the festival in the coming years. Dwight Devora, USJ- R Intern
