CLASSES will resume in the cities of Mandaue and Lapu-Lapu today after tropical storm Auring turned into a low- pressure area yesterday.

Although the Philippine Atmospheri­c, Geophysica­l and Astronomic­al Services Administra­tion has downgraded Auring, officials of the two cities still prepared yesterday for the effects of the bad weather.

Mandaue Mayor Gabriel Luis Quisumbing told Sun.Star Cebu that classes at all levels will be back today.

Quisumbing led yesterday the meeting of the City Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council as part of their preparatio­n.

The City Government prepared relief goods and evacuation centers.

Flood-prone barangays were also placed on red alert status.

CDRRM Office identified Tipolo, Subangdaku, Guizo, Mantuyong, Looc, Cambaro, Umapad, Paknaan and Cubacub as flood-prone areas. “Vehicles to ferry stranded commuters will be pre-positioned in Banilad and Subangdaku in case of flooding,” said Quisumbing in his Facebook post yesterday. Vacant lot For the fire victims in Barangay Maguikay who stayed in a vacant lot, Maguikay Elementary School was opened as an evacuation site.

In Lapu-Lapu, City Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Officer Andy Berame said classes will resume today considerin­g that several classes were already suspended in the past due to holidays, fiesta and bad weather.

Berame said pumpboats like those traveling to Olango Island were allowed to sail at 2 p.m. yesterday.

Berame said no pump boat was rescued yesterday due to Auring, following reports that a sea craft had an emergency.

“Atong kuyaw diri storm surge kung naay tropical storm (What we are afraid of here is a storm surge),” Berame said.

Barangays Baring and Tingo in Olango have been identified as prone to storm surge.

No residents were evacuated yesterday.

Lapu-Lapu CDRRMC assigned teams that will take care of siphoning floodwater in Maribago and Poblacion area and a team for will do the clearing operation.

Berame said they also had a teamfor roving and monitoring, and another one for the assessment of damage.
