More than 30 families from the 6.5-hectare socialized housing area in Barangay Paknaan, Mandaue City were evacuated, following heavy rains yesterday.

Mayor Luigi Quisumbing ordered a forced evacuation at the relocation site to the area’s multipurpose building when the water rose after the Butuanon River overflowed.

Also, they were expecting high tide, he said.

“Barangay officials together with the City Social Welfare and Development and the Mandaue City Police Office will be assisting affected residents to safety,” he said

According to City Disaster Risk Reduction and Management (CDRRM) Officer Felix Suico, more than eight structures were affected past 11 p.m. last Monday.

CDRRM personnel left a fiber glass boat in the barangay to be used in case the water continues to rise.

Since rain was experienced the whole day yesterday, Quisumbing canceled classes in public primary and secondary schools.

Suico said flooding was experienced on A. S. Fortuna St. and some of the city roads, but these were passable.

“So far, there was no reported incident from different baran- gays. We are closely monitoring the situation. We encouraged the residents to please prepare,” he said in Cebuano.

At least six persons living in shanties in Sitio Nawanaw, Barangay Subangdaku were also moved to higher ground after the Mahiga Creek almost overflowed.

Aside from them, no other families were rescued as of noon yesterday, Suico said.

In Barangay Maguikay, the CDRRM officer said they advised fire victims to transfer to a multipurpose building and to the gym of the Maguikay Elementary School.

However, families refused to leave the vacant lot where they are temporarily staying.

An officer of the sitio’s homeowners’ association had allowed them to stay in his billiard hall.

At least 308 families in Sitio Salvacion, Maguikay were affected by fire last Jan. 1.

In a related incident, the mayor said that two children were saved and one remains missing after they jumped into the Cansaga Bay yesterday afternoon.

We are closely monitoring the situation. We encouraged the residents to please prepare. MANDAUE MAYOR LUIGI QUISUMBING
