Speak Cebuano proudly

COMMENDABLE. I should commend the bigwigs of Marie Ernestine School (MES) for allocating the entire month of January each year as Buwan sa Sugboanon (Month of the Cebuano) in order to encourage the school’s elementary pupils and high school students to love the dialect. In fact, they will have their Adlaw sa Sayaw ug Balak (Day of Dance and Poem) on Jan. 27 as part of the monthlong observance. It will be held at the MES LapuLapu City campus.

PROUD. For the young, they should feel proud of their being Cebuanos and their dialect. There is nothing to be ashamed of when it comes to speaking it. Sadly, most of the youth today don’t appreciate the dialect and instead prefer to communicate in English. So, I laud the MES leadership for initiating the Buwan sa Sugboanon that I hope they will sustain as an annual activity.

LAUGHTER. For sure, these four stars shall prove to one and all that indeed, laughter is the best medicine. Chokoleit, Pokwang, K Brosas and Pooh will tickle our funny bone for two nights in a show aptly titled “A Funny Valentine.” We all know that these popular personalities are four of the country’s topnotch standup comedians so expect a truly entertaining show. CORRECTION. I stand corrected. I erred last week regarding the result of the first ever Pasko sa Sugbo Original Daygon Songwriting Contest that was initiated by Team Martin Productions in cooperation with Soundtraxx Production Studio. Here’s the correction. Joseph Barulo’s Pasko Na, interpreted by the Los Cantantes de Cebu, was the grand champion. Second placer was the Hardie Bigcas composition titled Ate, Kuya, Mamasko Ra Mi as sung by the C3 Choir and the third placer was Jay-arr Librando’s Manaygon Ta as performed by OZsome Friends.
