Landslides hit 8 brgys.; no death, injury reported

- RTF

The heavy downpour yesterday caused soil to loosen in seven mountain barangays and in one urban barangay in Cebu City.

Aside from this, parts of a house along the Butuanon River in Barangay Pitos were swept away by floodwater, but there were no reports of injuries or casualties.

Another house was destroyed after a tree fell on it in Barangay Lorega. No one was injured.

Mayor Tomas Osmeña ordered the suspension of all elementary and high school classes both in public and private schools yesterday.

The Cebu City Disaster Risk Reduction Management Office (CCDRRMO) reported eight landslides in Barangays Sirao, Toong, Agsungot, Sapangdaku, Pitos, Binaliw, Malubog and Busay.

All landslides happened yesterday morning.

The first two reported incidents happened simultaneously in Sirao and Toong at 7:50 a.m.

Roads in the barangays were closed until these were cleared of debris.

Four hours later, another massive landslide hit Sirao, prompting the CCDRRMO to evacuate 42 fami- lies to the Sirao Elementary School.

Except for yesterday afternoon’s incident, all the other landslides did not hit any residential area.

CCDRRMO chief Nagiel Bañacia said there were no reports of injuries or deaths.

He, however, requested homeowner associations to be on high alert and impose forced evacuation of its members should their areas be hit by flood.

Bañacia advised the public to be extra careful and immediately leave their homes at the first sign of increased water levels or loosening of soil. /
