- HANNAH V. OBAL / Writer @HannahObal

Has anyone ever been curious about playing board games but never really had the time to go and research about certain games, or go out and buy them? Not to worry, a new hangout place in town knows exactly how to take those woes away.

Owners Ian Ong, Sher Ko, Poy Mendoza and Dale Chong now share their dream of a home for all Cebuano board gamers—where the only reason people take out their phones and gadgets is to invite their friends and family to join them—in the form of Dice Kong Board Game Cafe, where the games are in the spotlight and being unable to play a board game is now a thing of the past.

CHECK OUT THESE REASONS WHY DICE KONG TOTALLY WINS AT BEING AT THE TOP OF ONE’S HANGOUT LIST! Great location.

Located at Axis, Vibo Place, Escario St., Cebu City, Dice Kong definitely wins at being accessible, Axis being too hard to miss from the main road. It doesn’t get any better than that.

Friendly people.

At Dice Kong, friendliness is such a common thing. It comes as no surprise that faces soon become familiar after the second visit to the place. The owners themselves don’t miss a beat to making customers feel comfy at Dice Kong, teaching people how to play board games and even sitting down with them to play a game or two. Here, it’s all about building the board game community and making personal connections sans the emojis and hashtags.

An array of choices.

Walking into Dice Kong, the place is simple and unassuming, laidback and chill. But a quick glance at the shelf and one can instantly be treated to a sensory overload with the number of board games this place has. From simple and quick games to learn such as “Spot It,” “Halli Galli,” to games like “Settlers of Catan,” “Ticket to Ride,” “Splendor” and “Survive” that can last for more than an hour, the possibilities are endless. Ian and Poy contribute heavily to the 170 or so games available at Dice Kong, most of them coming from their personal collections.

Change is constant.

The awesomeness doesn’t even end there. Dice Kong doesn’t stop at just being content at having a large collection of games. With them, change is constant and it’s the good kind of change everyone likes! New games are always coming in and ready to be played.

Food and drinks.

Have a hankering for the munchies? Dice Kong has that covered, too. The menu has a good amount of choices from hot dogs and fries to rice meals. Floats, coffee, as well as beers are available for anyone who needs a good jolt to stay awake.

Good times ahead.

Tournaments are always being set up at Dice Kong wherein newbies and hardcore players can join the events and compete. Monthly tournaments, to be known as the Jungle Smash, are set to become a mainstay, with different board games to be featured. Plus, the long operating hours also allow everyone to have a good time. From Sunday to Thursday, Dice Kong closes at midnight, while Friday and Saturday, the cafe extends up to 2 a.m. just so one can play to his heart’s content.
