- / FMG

A Korean couple’s parasailing adventure ended in tragedy yesterday morning off Barangay Punta Engaño in Lapu-Lapu City. Lapu-Lapu City Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Officer Andy Berame confirmed at 6 p.m. that Seong Soo Kim, 64, did not make it after the rope that tethered his parasail to a speedboat snapped. It was not clear how high up Kim and his wife were at the time of the accident. The wife, Jam Sik Lim, 60, was recuperating in the Mactan Doctors’ Hospital as of press time. City Hall will investigate why NTJ Watersports proceeded with the parasailing trip when there was a gale warning from the weather bureau yesterday. Before the accident, the couple had scheduled a diving trip for today.

A 64-year- old Korean man died while his wife was injured after they went parasailing in Barangay Punta Engaño, Lapu-Lapu City despite a gale warning issued by the weather bureau yesterday.

Seong Soo Kim did not make it although he was brought to the hospital after the rope that tethered his parasail wing (which looks like a parachute) snapped and broke away from the speedboat that was towing the couple. His wife, 60-year- old Jam Sik Lim, was recuperating in Mactan Doctors’ Hospital as of press time.

The initial investigation stated that the couple went to Super Fish Dive Center.

Joy Amistad, dive master of Super Fish, told reporters that the shop referred the pair to NTJ Watersports Cebu, an adjacent establishment, because Super Fish did not offer a parasailing activity. The Kim couple started parasailing past 10 a.m. According to NTJ manager Francis Lumaban, the speedboat operator found it difficult to rescue the Koreans because strong winds quickly dragged the fallen parasail wing away from the craft.

Lapu- Lapu City Disaster Risk Reduction and Management ( CDRRM) Officer Andy Berame con- firmed at 6 p. m. that the Korean man died. It wasn’t clear how high up the couple was when the accident took place.

Berame said that the authorities will include Super Fish in the investigation because they had referred the Koreans to another shop although there was a gale warning.

Based on the details received by the CDRRM office, the Korean couple had scheduled a diving trip for today through Super Fish. Lapu-Lapu Police Station 2 will refer the accident to the Lapu-Lapu City Police Office Homicide Section.
