The Cebu City Government has started the distribution of sardines to households in Sitio Sudlon, Barangay Lahug in exchange of their garbage.
The Department of Public Services (DPS) is implementing the project dubbed as “Basura Mo, Sardinas Ko.”
The project is funded by the accelerated social amelioration program (ASAP) funds.
It was Mayor Tomas Osmeña who conceptualized the project and told reporters that he was willing to give out other items aside from cans of sardines in exchange of garbage.
DPS assistant head John Paul Gelasque said that Lahug is the pilot area of the project and they are set to fully implement it by March.
During yesterday’s implementation, DPS were able to distribute around 300 cans of sardines.
Gelasque said that project aims to encourage residents to be responsible in disposing of their trash.
“Initially, we observed that the project is effective because many cooperated yesterday. It’s good for the City because instead of throwing their garbage anywhere, like in the rivers and creeks, residents are now saving their garbage so they can exchange it for sardines,” he said.
If project will continue, Gelasque said there will be improvement in the proper disposal of garbage in the entire city.
