P5M DAMAGE IN QUAKE-HIT SURIGAO

1,034 houses, 12 schools, 5 roads, 6 bridges damaged, says NDRRMC

Around P5 million worth of facilities and infrastruc­ture were damaged due to the 6.7 magnitude earthquake that shook the province of Surigao last Friday, the NDRRMC said Sunday.

Around P5 million worth of facilities and infrastruc­tures were damaged due to the 6.7 magnitude earthquake that shook the province of Surigao last Friday, the National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (NDRRMC) said yesterday.

In its update, the NDRRMC said a total of 12 schools obtained major damage in their facilities, mostly on its walls, ceilings and posts that collapsed, affecting the learning materials inside the classrooms like computers and library.

The NDRRMC said the CARAGA Regional Hospital was partially damaged while the Surigao City airport will be closed for a month due to the damage in its runway.

It also said that a total of 1,034 houses in Surigao del Norte, particular­ly in the cities of Mainit, Malimono, San Francisco, Sison and Surigao were damaged. Of which, 155 are totally wrecked while 879 were damaged.

It said a total of five roads and six bridges incurred damages due to the earthquake.

The Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) said the Anao-aon Bridge collapsed and is not passable to any type of vehicle while the other road sections that were damaged are only passable for light vehicles.

However, electric supply in the affected areas is already restored since Saturday evening.

For its part, the Department of Social Welfare and Developmen­t (DSWD) said it has standby funds amounting to P1,608,152,843.65, including at least P1.4 billion as quick response fund and over P1 million worth of food and non-food items for the affected population. The NDRRMC said a total of 1,034 families or 5,170 persons were affected in the 54 baranggays in the province of Surigao del Norte.

It said 202 persons were injured to the earthquake and were brought to different hospitals for immediate treatment.

The NDRRMC likewise reported four persons dead but its regional office in Surigao del Norte said the earthquake killed six persons.
