Are you stumped by Trump?

- KARL ARIES EMERSON F. CABILAO

When news about Donald Trump’s victory in the U.S. elections broke, many were left in disbelief. Who would have thought that one of the richest businessmen in the world would inherit the seat at the White House and lead the world’s premier superpower? Trump could be remembered in many ways except being a government leader. During the campaign period, he created a lot of controversies especially with his radical views on pressing issues concerning his nation and the world. Filipinos were among those who closely watched the U.S. elections last year, many of whom have family and friends in the US. What are their worries now that the Donald is the new U.S. president? Zup readers share.

I’m quite concerned. His campaign did focus on issues that put a lot of weight on dividing America. Being a nation that stood firmly on freedom, he has clearly threatened this by raising racial and ethnic tensions. Being a Filipino, I am simply concerned about the millions of Filipino in the States, especially those undocumented ones, who have obviously contributed a lot to our economy. What worries me the most about this presidency is that the USA is one of the world’s superpowers, and the new president, who is a tycoon, thinks he can run the country as if he would be running a business. There will be no telling as to what extent the global economy will be affected and although change is slow, change is happening. ELISE COOPER LIM, 21, INTERIOR DESIGN STUDENT (USC)

There is this recent phrase I just saw which speaks to this question. Has worrying about something ever changed the outcome of anything? Worry, according to dictionary.com, “gives way to anxiety or unease; allow one’s mind to dwell on difficulty or troubles.” As human beings we’ve been evolutionarily designed to perceive worrying as a form of threat and have our survival instincts take over. When that happens, our animalistic nature kicks in and we just think about self-preservation, in other words being selfish, meaning making choices just to survive. This is where they say fight, flight, or freeze. For me I want to be more human instead of being an animal trying to survive. I live on trying to thrive, and in order to do that one must let go of worry. This allows us to focus on the opportunities not just for us but more importantly, others as well. When focusing on the uncertain we let go of the ability to focus on what one can do right now to make this moment have the best possible outcome. So I don’t worry about Trump at all, all I see is what is in front of me which is my friends, family and my goals. WALEED ALNASER, 23, U.S. ARMY COMBAT MEDIC
