SHS-ATENEO JOINS KILLER GROUP

Sacred Heart School-Ateneo de Cebu gets grouped with defending champion San Beda in SM-NBTC national finals Another Cebu team, St. Louis College to see action in Division 2 competitio­n

The odds just became tougher for the Sacred Heart School-Ateneo de Cebu Magis Eagles as they seek the national title in the SM-NBTC National High School Championsh­ip at the Mall of Asia Arena in Pasay City starting on March 13.

The Magis Eagles, one of the teams in the country that will be seeing action in the annual basketball tournament for high school students, is grouped in Group A along with defending champion San Beda College Red Cubs, and foreign ball clubs the AusPinoy of Australia and the FilAmSport­s of USA.

In Group B are UAAP champions Far Eastern University (FEU) Baby Tamaraws, NCAA titlists Malayan High School of Science (MIT) Red Robbins, and foreign clubs from Camp David of New Zealand and the returning Durham Crossover of Canada.

Right after the opening cere- mony on Monday, the Magis Eagles will face Team Australia at 11:30 a.m. and San Beda at 7 p.m. SHS-AdC’s date with USA will be on Tuesday at the Palm Coast Marina gym at 3:30 p.m.

Meanwhile, Division 2 qualifiers – the St. Louis College-Cebu (SLCC) Cardinals is grouped in Bracket 1 with the St. Joseph College of Olongapo City, the De La Salle-Lipa of Cavite and Notre Dame of Midsayap of Kidapawan City.

SLCC dislodged Mandaue Division champions Paref-Springdate during the Regional Finals that gave them the chance to make its first appearance to the Nationals.

The Cardinals will take on Da La Salle-Lipa at 9:30 a.m. on Monday, St. Joseph College at 3 p.m. and Notre Dame on Tuesday at 9:30 am.

The annual showcase of the country’s top high school players will be on March 16 with the Divi- sion 2 All-Star Game to set off at 9 a.m. with coaches Aldin Ayo of UAAP champions De la Salle University Green Archers and Mike Jarin who erstwhile called the shots for the NCAA champions San Beda Red Lions will the coaches.

The players will be selected through their performanc­e during the tournament.

To be followed by the Division 1 ASG will showcase the players who were invited by NBTC to join the tryouts held last Feb. 25 and 26.

Cebuanos Raul Jancork Cabahug of the University of the Visayas, Andrew Velasco of the SHS-AdC Magis Eagles and John Galinato who is now playing for the Chiang Kai Shek College Blue Dragons will team up for the South team which will be coached by Josh Reyes while the North Team will be coached by Jong Uichico.
