Mandaue to resume demolition today

- FMG

The Mandaue City Government will resume today the demolition of structures of 33 households in Barangay Mantuyong, after the team was stopped by some residents yesterday.

Once cleared, the area will become part of the re-blocking project of the City Government at the fire site.

Lawyer James Allan Sayson, Mandaue City legal assistant, told Sun.Star Cebu that the City Legal Office (CLO) had issued notices of demolition last September 2016 and last month.

A pre-demolition conference was also held last Friday, attended by the concerned residents and some local government officials.

After the conference, Sayson said they thought that the residents already agreed with the demolition. The CLO got surprised when homeowners resisted the demolition yesterday morning.

“Problema lang (The problem was) they resisted. As to their resistance, we felt nay mga nagsulsol sa ilaha nga dili mo-follow sa atong process sa (that someone instructed them not to follow the process of the) government,” he said.

In a separate interview, CLO Chief Omar Redula said the affected families will be temporarily transferred to the Cebu International Convention Center grounds where fire victims of Barangays Guizo and Mantuyong have been staying.

After that the road blocking project, Redula said that the families can go back to the site.

The 33 households were not affected by the fire last March 12, 2016, but Sayson said that they will be included in the drawing of lots for the fire survivors based on the compromise agreement and court order.

The residents and fire survivors may either go back to the fire site or to the relocation site in Lapu-Lapu City, he said.

During a meeting at the City Housing and Urban Development Office yesterday, the residents agreed with the demolition, but they asked for a written confirmation from the mayor that they can go back to Mantuyong or transfer to the relocation site. /
