A 'sharper' summer

- VERONIKA HIPOLITO / Illustrator

Summer is a time to be relaxed and free, not from responsibilities (of course) but from the pressures of a having to face a tough day ahead at work or in school with a really gloomy sky above the city or a punishing downpour that has everyone looking for cover (we’re in a tropical country, after all).

The sun’s out; summer vacation is here. Here are some tips on how to make sure one’s summer is fun yet productive, as one can learn while enjoying himself as well.

Get creative. Get your hands busy by going through video tutorials of various types of craft making. Whether it’s to make new room decorations from scratch or trying out that one recipe you once saw online, this summer is the time to use all the hours of watching craft video tutorials to the test. If maybe the DIY (do it yourself ) route isn’t for you, maybe enrolling in summer art and design classes would be better. Learn how to paint, draw, or perhaps even the basics in graphic design or photo editing. Time to level up the art skills and step toward the making of your very own artistic masterpiece. / DRB

Strike a pose. Modeling is more than just a hobby—it’s a passion; that is, if one really wants it. It’s not as easy as it looks as those who’ve been at it for years make it seem. Modeling is not just about looking good in photos and on the runway. It’s about that fierce projection that takes practice and dedication to perfect. No one wants a clothes hanger for a model. With summer coming in full swing, it’s as good a time as any for aspiring models to learn the ropes. With the summer break comes the roster of modeling workshops one can join. Do the research. Learn from the experts and pretty soon it’ll be a cakewalk. / MRL

Bury one’s head. Reading is a great hobby to have: one can do it anywhere, with a book or magazine in one’s hands, or on one’s cellphone or the internet. It takes one to places, to times present, past and future. And it can make one feel the gamut of human emotions: sorrow, wonder, happiness, love, hope. The best thing about it is that it is not an expensive hobby. You can read novels, essays, books through your cellphone or computer, and if you want the feel of a book in your hand, you can always borrow from a friend (please return), or why not, from the Cebu City Public Library. Browse there and you’ll be surprised at the books available, not just for learning purposes but also novels for leisure reading. / JRN
