Lunches, dinners and a labor of love
These energetic and dedicated ladies, members of the Quota Club of Mandaue, eagerly made the trip to Brgy. Bagacay, a mountain village in the town of Carcar, for their latest outreach project: Quota Cares 2017-Weaving Skills Training Program, in partnership with IPI Foundation.
Recipients of this livelihood project were the hard-of-hearing and womenfolk of the barangay who were trained to weave trash materials (sticker label backing paper from IPI) into usable, recyclable wallets, bags etc., literally converting trash to cash!
Quota therefore, would like to express thanks to IPI, a manufacturing firm in Cebu and its executive director, Lourdes Damazo, for making possible this sustainable program, which will continue to benefit more underserved mountain communities in the years to come.
We laud the Mandaue Quotarians, led by its president, architect Lizeta Uy, for this labor of love!
With the explosive collaboration of chef extraordinaire Raki Urbina and food stylist Teresin Mendezona, expect a burst of fantastic food choices which they presented at the Flavors of the Philippines: Sugbo at The Northwing, SM City Cebu.
The event was in support of the Department of Tourism’s (DOT) thrust to promote the Philippines as a Center for Gastronomy in Asia, thus the catchy theme, “Cebu—More Than Just Lechon.”
With our very own “puso,” Chef Raki introduced such mouth-watering dishes as Paella Puso, Larsian Bistek, Manok ni San Miguel etc. Raki’s innovativeness knows no bounds!
The DOT’s unique program is part of the many simultaneous foodfests happening throughout Luzon, the Visayas and Mindanao. Guess who came to lunch? “Just to gather our dear classmates again,” was hostess Marilu Briones-Chiongbian’s reply to “What’s the occasion?”
There were two balikbayans who jetted in: Cherrie Duterte- Gross from Germany and Grace Roa- Gonzalez from the USA. From Metro Manila came Baby Deen-Sison, and Marinela Velez flew in from Cagayan de Oro.
Our “local” Theresians did a fine job of updating their classmates, in between morsels of delicious “lechon” which Marilu so graciously served along with other native fare.
There were great squeals of laughter with some somber notes, but a grand time was had by all. Same time next year, girls?
