First-time parents send their child to school

“Sending off my child to school for the first time makes me scared and excited at the same time. Scared, because I'm not sure of how my child would react to the new environment; excited, thinking about what my child can learn especially developing her intellectual and social skills. As with every step along this parenting journey, we just can't believe our little baby is starting school, As we prepare, we give her good advice such as being polite to her classmates and listening carefully to her teachers. My husband and I have been preparing for this journey. We couldn't be more proud of our daughter.” Shannen Pepito-Capiral

“For a first time momma, of course, I feel excited! I can't wait for Vance to learn new things, meet new friends and prepare her ‘baon.' I don't really feel anxious since I'm confident that she can easily adjust to a new environment. As long as she feels safe enough, Vance can totally rock the house. There are so many things to consider like knowing the right time she's ready, choosing the best school for her to be in, and how we, working parents can be hands-on at the same time. As for Vance, when we knew she was ready our first step was to enroll her to summer class in our preferred school right away. It didn't only prepare her for the next step, but also us, parents.” April Yap

“I feel a mixture of excitement and fear as I will be sending my child Zee to school for the first time. Of course, I'm excited to see how she would be around other kids and with another adult teaching her things. But at the same time I fear that maybe she wouldn't like it or she wouldn't interact with other kids. But of course, I know it's just the adjustment period. I prepared her by showing her photos of what it's like to be in a school environment, showing her basic books that she will soon be using and telling her that soon she's going to be in school too.” Carmel Allora Llopes

“Sending my child to school for the first time is tough and scary. I'm thinking about her safety, and if she might look for me there. But I am so excited to have my daughter Lykha meet new kids and learn new things.

For the preparation, I asked the school administration if I could meet my child's teacher and the school owner, and requested for a tour around the school facility. I wanted to know their procedure when children are crying for their parents, and to make sure a school staff member is ready to help my child with the transfer from my care to their classroom when I drop her off because no parents or guardians are allowed to enter the classrooms. I specifically wanted to find out how the school structures its daily schedule, so somehow, I would know what its activities are and be able to “follow up” with my daughter by the time she comes home from school.” Khristine Navaja Seco

“When my husband and I finally decided to send our three-year-old son to nursery school this year, I had a lot of concerns in mind like the time pressure, knowing that I am a working mom. I know that this is just a few of the many firsts that I will be encountering as a parent, but knowing that a lot of mothers who are in the same situation as I am are handling it so well, why can't I? Now that June is fast approaching, I can't help but feel excited and anxious at the same time. Gean will be exposed in a new environment and will meet new people. Every day, I take a moment to talk to him to mentally prepare him and hopefully, he will embrace this new journey of his childhood.” Catherine Ancit

“As a mother, I am very positive and excited to send my child to school knowing that he will learn so many things outside his comfort zone and he can interact with children of the same age who can help him develop his talents and skills. Even before, I always encouraged my son to learn and enjoy at the same time because I believe learning should be fun to motivate the children to go to school. I make sure that he understands the meaning of the word ‘respect' for him to respect the people around him, especially his teachers and classmates. I also remind him of the importance of education so that he would know why he should study.” Lelani Diamante

Going to school for the first time is a milestone for every child and, of course, for the parents. Most parents find it harder to adjust than their child because they worry more about the child's safety and comfort knowing their child is out there alone. The sight of one's child in a school uniform and school bag could bring a tear to every parent's eye. As a parent, one wants to make it as easy as possible for the child when starting school for the first time. Parents who are sending off their children to school for the first time, share how they prepare for their child's first day of school.
