Cebu City’s 80 barangays are encouraged to create their own community alert system for disasters and emergencies. The council approved a resolution authored by Councilor Joy Pesquera, asking the Association of Barangay Councils (ABC) to urge the barangays to set up devices beyond speakers and sirens. Councilor Margarita Osmeña suggested a set of guidelines for the public to familiarize themselves with the system. Councilor Philip Zafra, ABC president, said they are already working on a system. “It’s indeed essential in emergency response and such similar instances. We will definitely establish it,” Zafra said.

Four barangay officials in San Fernando, Cebu are being monitored by the local police for their alleged illegal drug activities.

San Fernando Police Station chief Senior Insp. Adrian Nalua said that the officials, one of whom is a barangay chief, were reportedly in cahoots with self-confessed local drug lord Franz Sabalones.

Nalua said that they received numerous complaints from residents against the illegal activities of the four officials.

Nalua begged off from naming these officials since they are still verifying the complaints.

He warned them to stop their illegal activities or they will have to face the full force of the law.

Nalua assured, though, that not all village officials in San Fernando are involved in the illegal drug trade.

Some of them, he said, are assisting the police in ensuring that their villages are drug-free.

Nalua asked residents in the town to be vigilant and report anyone in their areas that are selling illegal drugs. /
