200 Surigao Norte pupils get new classrooms

- JKV

Students of two public elementary schools in Surigao del Norte will no longer have to spend their classes outdoors during the start of the new school year.

Carmen Copper Corp., a Cebu-based mining firm, spent close to P2 million to rehabilitate four classrooms that were damaged by the 6.7-magnitude earthquake that hit the province earlier this year. The firm also built a new classroom.

In less than two months, Carmen Copper restored the four damaged classrooms of Anao-oan Central Elementary School in San Francisco town and constructed a new classroom in Ima Elementary School located in Sison town.

More than 200 pupils are expected to benefit from Carmen Copper’s projects.

Carmen Copper also funded the repair of the stage of the Sison Central Elementary School.

Engr. Felizardo Cal, head of Carmen Copper’s Engineering and Construction Division, said that they decided to help the Surigao schools after local officials sought their help.

When they came to Surigao del Norte, Cal said they were tasked to assess the stability of Province-owned structures.

In the process, they discovered the situation of the two schools.

Dominic Larong of the Department of Education Surigao del Norte said they welcomed Carmen Copper’s assistance since classes will already start in a few days. /
