The Sacred Heart School-Ateneo de Cebu’s (SHSAdC) Magis Eagles lost to the University of San Jose-Recoletos (USJ-R) right in their own backyard in the Visayas leg of the 15th Shakey’s Girls V-League at the Lux Oriens Gym in Canduman, Mandaue City. USJ-R beat SHS-AdC in three sets, 25-12, 25-23, 25-21.

University of San Jose-Recoletos (USJ-R) finally got back at Sacred Heart School-Ateneo de Cebu (SHS-AdC), beating the Magis Eagles in their own backyard in the Visayas leg of the 15th Shakey’s Girls V-League yesterday at the Lux Oriens Gym of SHS-AdC in Canduman, Mandaue City.

USJ-R outclassed SHS-AdC in almost every aspect of the match, sweeping the Magis Eagles in three sets, 25-12, 25-23, 25-21.

SHS-AdC looked sloppy in the first set with a lot of errors. The set, however, was close early on with mistakes from the Baby Jaguars. USJ-R finally found its rhythm and took the first set after a 15-2 run anchored on the attack of Shiela Kiseo and Chriszelle Anne Caasi.

After a quick pep talk, SHSAdC made it a competitive second set with the offensive onslaught of Jennifer Delos Santos and Danielle Malazarte. The second set went down the wire with both teams tied at 2323 after a block by Delos Santos. SHS- AdC made a crucial mistake and sent the ball out of bounds to give USPF the set point. Kiseo then won the set with service ace.

Focus

The third set was also neckand-neck with both teams trading leads. After a 14-14 tie, USJ-R finally took the lead. Janine Angob got USJ-R the match point with a spike and Anne Krizzia Caasi sealed the win with another spike.

“That’s how the game goes, someone has to lose. We have to learn from it,” said coach Roldan Potot of their loss to SHS-AdC in the Cebu Schools Athletic Foundation Inc. (Cesafi). “I told my players to always focus on every game and use their experience. Most of my players here also played in the Batang Pinoy, Cviraa and Palaro. I always remind them to not be complacent. They started to relax but I told them not to up until the final point.”

USJ-R lost to SHS-AdC in the Cesafi girls finals last October after four sets.

Meanwhile, the University of Southern Philippines Foundation (USPF) beat 2016 Shakey’s Girls V-League Visayas champion Southwestern University (SWU) for third place honors, 25-14, 2225, 25-22.

USJ-R’s Anne Krizzia Caasi was named the league’s MVP. SHS-AdC player Kaye Santos was awarded as the Best Setter, while USJ-R’s Dianne Duazo was given the Best Libero award.

Delos Santos of SHS- AdC was named the first Best Outside Attacker, and Kiseo of USJ- R was awarded as the second- best Outside Attacker. USJ- R’s Angob won the 1st Best Blocker award and USPF’s Ana Marie Cuerbo won the 2nd Best Blocker award.
