God’s people who serve

- EVELYN R. LUAB eveluab@yahoo.com

We who cannot go to mass rely on the lay ministers who come to our houses on Sundays to give us Holy Communion. I attend either the 12:15 mass through CCTN or EWTN at 8 p.m on cable television. On Sundays, I am able to hear the St. Paul’s mass at 6 a.m. on ABS-CBN.

The lay ministers are a blessing to us. There are three of us who are visited by these laborers of Christ at Newtown Estate Pardo. They come from Basak Pardo Cathedral and they come to visit us after the 5 p.m. mass. They work silently and pray with us.

Last May 31 was the feast of the Visitation. Mother Mary, too, went to serve her cousin Elizabeth without any delay when she found out that Elizabeth needed help.

There really are people who serve in silence. Last week, my daughter had an air-conditioning unit installed in her room. A team of three men came at 4 p.m. They finished their job at about 8 p.m. By the time the job was done, they left our place just as neat as they found it. When I commented on their efficiency, they explained that they were protecting the good name of their company. Their company took good care of them in terms of benefits and overtime pay. They felt that good service was part of their good will too.

Another incident caught my attention. A veterinarian came to pick up our two dogs to cut their long hair. She came to pick up the two dogs. When she returned the dogs, they were welltrimmed and very clean because she also gave them a bath which was not part of the deal. There are really people who give commendable service.

In these present times we get so many empty promises. Even big-named dressmakers say they will finish your dress on a certain date, however, when you go to pick it up, the dress isn’t ready. That seems to be the norm nowadays.

In most subdivisions, the people in charge collect fees yet the garbage remains uncollected for days. Some neighbors promise to tie their dogs but a recent incident sent my wound carer running for dear life because a huge dog of our neighbor tried jumping on her. It was a good thing she reached our gate in time. Even people who deliver mineral water are remiss. They promise to bring the badly needed drinking water but more often than not they are late.

The promise of profit and expediency seem to be the more important aspect of service. No wonder we applaud those who work silently and humbly. They are the ones who dedicate their lives to helping us live our lives too.
