DAD WANTS PARK, PLAYGROUND IN SRP

Garganera also wants City Hall to transfer the trees affected by the BRT project to the park in Barangay Pasil.

A Cebu City councilor wants to set aside 10 hectares in the South Road Properties (SRP) for the construction of a park and playground.

Councilor Joel Garganera said that he will draft a legislation on the matter and submit it to the City Council for approval.

Garganera, head of the council’s committee on environment, said that his proposal is an offshoot of the present status of the “abandoned” children’s park and playground in Barangay Pasil.

“Everywhere in the world, a park is part of a livable city. In a few years time, the open spaces that will be left are the roads and sidewalks. I’m really looking in the SRP, which is breathable, to have a major park for the next generation,” he said.

The councilor said it is high time that a park and playground be constructed since the administration “has not been paying attention” to the facility in Pasil, a project of former mayor Michael Rama.

“The residents in the area shared that they were so happy to have the park there, but now that it’s not in top shape, parents are appealing that it be revived,” Garganera said.

Since the City Government will earthball the trees affected by the Bus Rapid Transit project, the councilor suggested that these be transferred to the park in Pasil instead.

The barangay officials of Pasil, who are allies of Team Rama, earlier said that they don’t want to be involved in matters relating to the park, but heard that the local fish market will be transferred to the area for accessibility.

The site where the park was built is where the old Pasil Fish Market stood.

The area was converted into a park after the market was destroyed by the 7.9-magnitude earthquake that hit Cebu on Oct. 15, 2013. /
