Require all NSA heads to resign pre-SEA Games

- MIKE T. LIMPAG mikelimpag@gmail.com

Here’s an interesting idea, based on what was espoused online--require all National Sports Association heads to resign. This suggestion, which I read in one post online, was raised to help get sports in the country in the right direction.

But, here’s an even more radical idea. Require all presidents of the national sports associations--including their lackeys--to submit a courtesy resignation before the SEA Games. And should their athletes fail to at least equal their medal haul, or performance, in the previous SEAG, then their resignations are deemed accepted and a search continues for the new heads of the NSA. (Question: how did we fare in equestrian in the previous SEA Games?)

If they better their performance, then the resignation letters will be returned, so the NSA heads who know what they are doing can continue to do so.

The SEA Games may be an international event, but for those who’ve been in the business for so long, it is despairingly called the “inter-barangay” of international sports. It’s the lowest level of competition a national athlete can play in. And if an NSA keeps getting zero medals in the SEA Games, shouldn’t it be the time for the officials of that NSA to resign? But then again, that move would take a bit of courage, and of course, a sense of honor and dignity on the part of the NSA presidents. And dignity and honor, we simply do not have.

If we had it, we wouldn’t be having so many issues with our NSAs--multiple officers (volleyball), lack of elections (chess), absence of programs (volleyball, equestrian, tennis) and the mother of all problems, overstaying presidents (tennis, equestrian and POC.) And that’s from the sports that I could recall off the bat. Given time and research, we can unearth more cans of worms in each of the NSA. Heck, the first time I learned that we have an NSA for wrestling was when another group of officers claimed they were the legit officers, not the ones in office. I wonder what happened to them.

When Digong declared Martial Law, someone pointed out to extend the Martial Law to sports and remove those who are not after the welfare of the athletes (Patafa was used as a prime example.) But, I don’t think that’s what’s needed, for now.

What we need is a change in mindset, where athletes, not presidents, have the voice and of course, where programs, not funding and staying in office, is the name of the game.

What is needed is for our sports officials to put sports back in the limelight. Oh wait, that’s not supposed to be radical, is it?
