Yong is glad that the local government units of Cebu have communicated with the Chinese Government, and said he will relay the information their citizens who are interested in coming to Cebu. “We can send all the messages back to China on how the LGUs and military forces enforce security measures. The Chinese tourists can receive the real message and can have a view on the situation here with the information we extend to them,” he said. Yong said he had been receiving messages from Chinese citizens who intend to visit Cebu, concerning their safety and security. He had assured them that, so far, he had not encountered any problem during his official visits in Cebu.

Although some of their citizens have expressed concerns on traveling to the Philippines due to recent attacks, Chinese Consul General Shi Yong said this will not affect the entry of Chinese tourists in Cebu.

He lauded local government units (LGU) for communicating with the Chinese Government, which in turn, disseminated information to their citizens who are interested in visiting Cebu.

“We can send all the messages back to China on how the LGUs and military forces enforce security measures. The Chinese tourists can receive the real message and have a view on the situation here,” Yong said.

The official said they have been receiving calls from their citizens, expressing their worries on whether it is “safe” to visit the country.

While the “sense of security” may vary among tourists, Yong said he has not encountered any problems during his official visits in Cebu.

“The tourist will be the judge on whether he or she trusts the security measures or not. But I’ve been booking rooms here and the room occupancy in hotels is very high,” he said.

The People’s Republic of China plans to open more direct flights from Shanghai, Guangzhou and other big cities in China to Cebu.

“In the coming months, I think more and more Chinese will come here,” Yong said. /
