The country should cherish its independence as it faces new threats, Gov. Hilario Davide III said during the observation of the 119th Independence Day commemoration at the Capitol yesterday.

Davide told provincial employees that while the country has long been freed from foreign oppressors, it currently faces threats from within, particularly from extremist groups, who want to cause chaos.

Aside from terrorists, Davide said that the nation also faces other threats, such as those who threaten to disrupt the balance of nature through illegal environmental practices.

Citing the Marawi conflict, Davide believes the country will eventually win against the Maute terrorist group.

“Yes, the Filipino will win again in Mindanao. Winning is this nation’s destiny. The problems we are experiencing would only fortify our nationhood, our unity,” he said.

He said that celebrating Independence Day should also serve as a reminder to the importance of freedom and the right of people to express themselves.

At the Police Regional Office 7, Director Noli Taliño read the message of PNP Chief Ronald dela Rosa in front of the men and women who commemorated Independence Day in the headquarters.

Also in attendance was National Commission on Muslim Filipinos Director Malo Manonggiring, who called for peace in the whole country, not only in Marawi City.

“We are continuing our profiling together with the Cebu City Government because the evacuees are also Filipino, who are victims of the crisis,” Manonggiring said.

He assured that the conflict in Mindanao will not spill over in the region, saying that local Muslim communities have been coordinating with authorities to protect the Visayas.
