Dad wants more buses to ferry kids to school

- RVC

Instead of tolerating motorcycle drivers in Cebu City, Councilor Joel Garganera said that Mayor Tomas Osmeña should provide more vehicles like buses to the barangays to transport children to school.

Garganera, chairman of the City Council’s committee on transportation, said that the mayor should not compromise the safety of the kids by allowing them to ride motorcycles, which are prone to accidents.

“We are talking about children here and he will compromise the safety of the children? Can they still go to school if they encounter accidents? If he’s afraid that students might not be able to go to school, he should augment the vehicles of the barangays. They know where the students in their barangays are. But what is he doing? (He is) recalling the vehicles of the barangays,” Garganera said.

Osmeña earlier said that motorcycle drivers should be allowed to ferry students to school since there are areas in the city that have no access to public transport.

He also said that he will adjudicate basic traffic violations committed by motorcycle drivers.

He added that he is willing to settle violations of motorcycle drivers including those who will drive children to school and let them pay a fine of only P5, except for reckless driving and when they’re causing traffic.

Garganera said he is not against the operation of habal-habal (motorcycle-for-hire) in the city but its services should be limited to far-flung areas where there are no other transportation available.

Garganera pointed out that motorcycles-for-hire are seen on almost every street in the city. /
