More than 100 gas station operators in Cebu City were told in a meeting with local officials yesterday to tighten security measures, as part of efforts to prevent terrorist threats in Cebu nearly a month into the crisis in Marawi.

For his part, Cebu City Police Office Director Joel Doria said there was no “concrete evidence” that terrorists have reached the city, but reminded all residents to be “active rather than reactive.”

The Mandaue City Government is now taking steps to keep entertainment establishments safe.

Mandaue City Mayor Gabriel Luis Quisumbing said the City will establish a lifestyle zone “in order to allow for partying and revelry, but in safe and secure environments.”

Quisumbing clarified that the City will not close any bar or club by midnight, contrary to what was earlier reported.

Those entertainment establishments that are outside the lifestyle zone will just be required to drop their music volume below a certain level by midnight and stop serving alcoholic beverages by 1 a.m.

However, the mayor said that those bars and clubs within the lifestyle zone “will not be required to adhere to the noise level and liquor service stoppage.”

The City Government will consider the proximity of the lifestyle zone to the police stations, fire stations and residential areas.

“In almost every other country in the world, nightlife establishments are located in a centralized area in order for law enforcement to not be stretched out in case of untoward incidents,” said Quisumbing.

“We want everyone to enjoy Mandaue, but we want everyone to know they are safe while they do so. Given the events that have transpired in Resorts World Manila and other parts of the country, I have no higher priority than the safety and security of all that live in and all who visit this City,” he added.

In a separate interview, Glenn Antigua, chief for operations of the Traffic Enforcement Agency of Mandaue, said they are preparing for the City’s plan.

Once the lifestyle zone will be implemented, Antigua said team personnel will be assigned in the area to manage the traffic flow. /
