GLOBAL CEBU MOVE ON TO Q
Patrick Deyto saves two penalties, seals Global Cebu’s win via shootout in Singapore’s RHB Cup
After a string of sorry losses which saw the team surrender last-minute goals, Global Cebu FC finally survived a late collapse with Patrick Deyto coming up with the heroics against Geylang International in a penalty shootout, 3-2, after a high-scoring draw in regulation, 4-4.
The win earned Global Cebu FC a spot in the quarterfinal round of the tournament against Cambodian’s Boeung Ket Angkor.
Global Cebu, which lost to Home United in the AFC Cup also through a late goal, surrendered a 15-th minute goal to Yuki Ichigawa but Daryl Roberts equalized a minute later.
In the 39th, Roberts gave the Cebuano club the lead after converting a penalty kick but the lead didn’t last long as Victor Ortega scored an equalizer just before half-time.
In the second half, Roberts completed his hat trick just eight minutes after the break and OJ Clarino gave Global some breathing space after scoring in the 75th to make it 4-2.
However, the home team refused to buckle down and Geylang cut the lead to 4-3 with a penalty in the 83rd. In the dying minutes, Ricardo Sendra scored a last-gasp equalizer to send the match to extra time.
With no goals scored in the extra period, the match went to a shootout where Deyto redeemed himself, stopping shots by Sendra and Faritz Hameed to preserve the 3-2 win.
“We need to fix the end game but I’m proud of our boys for maintaing composure when everything was on the line,” Global FC owner Dan Palami said. /
