■ ‘TRAFFIC ADJUSTMENTS’ SET FROM JULY 1 TO 7 WHILE ASEAN DELEGATES MEET IN CEBU CITY

- RVC

Some delegates to meetings of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (Asean) are expected to start arriving in Cebu today, which will mean additional security duties in the venues. For commuters, traffic authorities advised that access to S. Osmeña Blvd. and Pope John Paul II may be limited when the meetings run from July 1 to 7 in the Radisson Blu Hotel. These roads will not be closed, the Cebu City Councilor Dave Tumulak assured. However, other vehicles may be temporarily stopped while delegates’ convoys use the roads in question. To tighten security in Cebu City, a team from the Metro Manila Development Authority also deployed additional security cameras.

Instead of a rerouting scheme, traffic managers will use the “stop-and-go” scheme for the Asean meetings

Traffic flow in some Cebu City roads will be affected when the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (Asean) meetings resume next week.

Cebu City Transportation Office operations chief Francisco Ouano said that a “stop-and-go” scheme will be implemented in roads near the meeting venues.

He clarified, though, that there will be no rerouting or road closure during the meetings.

“Once the convoy of the delegates passes, we will ask other vehicles to stop and make way because the delegates will be the priority,” Ouano said.

Councilor Dave Tumulak said that S. Osmeña Blvd. and Pope John Paul II Ave., which lead to Radisson Blu Hotel, will be affected by the traffic adjustment. Senior economic officials will meet at the Radisson from July 1 to 7.

“It will not take long because once the delegates’ convoy reaches the venue, our traffic group will allow other vehicles to pass. It’s just a matter of minutes,” he said.

With the arrival of some of the delegates today, Tumulak said the police and other government agencies have started to secure the delegates and venues.

Additional police and military personnel, K-9 dogs and bomb experts from the National Capital Region also arrived in Cebu yesterday to help secure the summit.

The Metropolitan Manila Development Authority also installed additional security cameras in the city, while emergency vehicles will be on standby in strategic areas to swiftly respond to incidents. /
