■ LAST 2 DAYS TO SWAP THOSE OLD BANK NOTES FOR THE NEW DESIGN

- TLN

Starting on Saturday, July 1, old bank notes will no longer be worth anything. That’s why the Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas (BSP) has reminded the public to bring their remaining old notes to the banks today or tomorrow. Only banks, municipal or provincial treasurers, and clerks of court were given a Sept. 30 deadline to turn over all their old notes to the central bank. “There will be no extension (for the rest of the public),” said BSP Regional Director Leonides Sumbi. Here’s a quick way to tell if your notes are those of the new design series: the serial numbers must not be of the same size; the last digit is bigger than the first

Those holding on to old bank notes have only until tomorrow, June 30, to exchange them with the new design series. By July 1, old bills will lose their monetary value, the Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas (BSP) said.

BSP Regional Director Leonides Sumbi said the deadline will not be extended.

Old bank notes are those whose serial numbers are uniform in size. Bank notes with serial numbers that are ascending in size are part of the new design series and do not need to be exchanged.

“It is only until this Friday that you can change your old bank notes. By old bank notes, I mean those with serial numbers that are uniform in font size. On July 1, all those old notes lose value. You can keep them as a souvenir or sell them to a collector,” Sumbi said.

Other old bills such as the P10 and P5 bills are also being accepted for exchange until June 30.

Old bank notes that are damaged will also be accepted as long as 60 percent of the bill’s surface, the signatures of the BSP governor and the President and the security thread are intact. /
