Impressed by the outcome of the Cebu Governor’s Cup, Gov. Hilario Davide III wants to replicate this next year
Cebu Gov. Hillario Davide III was pleased with the outcome of the 2017 Cebu Governor’s Cup Inter- Cities/Municipalities Basketball Tournament that he wants to see it happen again next year.
Speaking before thousands of basketball fans during Game 2 of the Finals in Consolacion National High School Gym last Wednesday, Davide assured that the tournament that has created a stir not just in Cebu but in the other places of the country as well.
“I would like to thank the teams who have made this project possible. There are a lot of good things that happened in this tournament and I hope we will have a bigger participation next year. The province will also promise to give bigger cash assistance to the teams that they can use during the entire course of the tournament,” Davide said.
The ongoing Cebu Governor’s Cup tournament drew a total of 38 teams. Minglanilla and Consolacion are playing the final game of the tournament on Sunday to determine who will go home with the bragging rights as the first champion of the tournament.
Gov. Davide is also aware of how the tournament attracted scouts, and how some players have already landed an athletic scholarship not just in Cebu but in Manila schools as well.
“I know there are some players who were already given scholarships from schools here in Cebu and Manila. We hope that by continuing this project, we may have more players get scholarship offers,” Davide added.
The Governor’s Cup has also entertained town people who wanted to watch a good basketball game.
It was evident in the jampacked gyms during the elimination and until the hosting of Consolacion for Game 2 of the Governor’s Cup Finals Series.
On Sunday, the tournament that started last April 9 will formally end and the winner of the winner-take-all Game 3 will go home with the P500,000 champion’s prize.
