On fight review, I say what’s the point?

- AL S. MENDOZA also147@yahoo.com

In its first review of a Manny Pacquiao fight several years back, the WBO (World Boxing Organization) panel found Pacquiao the winner.

That was reached after the first Pacquiao-Timothy Bradley fight, with Bradley grabbing a controversial points victory. But that was all there is to it. A five-man board reversed the decision of the three fight judges in the Pacquiao-Bradley bout, yes, but the original verdict stood.

The predicate preceding the reassessment of the fight: New decision toothless; old decision stays.

So a rematch was staged. Pacquiao defeated Bradley on points. No fight review.

With the score tied at 1-1, a third fight was needed to seal another trilogy for Pacquiao.

Pacquiao ran away with a unanimous decision victory.

Pacquiao is not new to trilogies as I had said here several times already.

The Pacquiao-Morales tussle was the PacMan’s first trilogy.

Pacquiao lost the first on points, surviving the last seven rounds of the 12-round fight in 2005 through sheer grit as he endured a bloodied right eyelid in the fifth.

The Fighting Senator swept the next two fights by thunderous knockouts.

Pacquiao’s third trilogy was against Juan Manuel Marquez, winning the second and third on points after their first encounter in 2004 ended in a controversial draw (one referee entered a wrong score, depriving Pacquiao of victory).

But Marquez more than made up for his twin losses when he knocked Pacquiao out in 2012 with a second left in the sixth round.

Elated no end, Marquez ducked all offers to fight Pacquiao again, insisting he would like to preserve the beauty of his knockout win over our living legend.

And now this, Pacquiao losing to Jeff Horn in another result deemed questionable by many pundits from around the world.

But since the review panel’s decision won’t affect anew the fight’s final result declaring Horn the winner, why the bother? What’s the point? The WBO has money to burn as to treat review fees to the fiveman board as a drop in the bucket?

The move will amount to nothing but fallacy of facts, if not mere illusions and delusions.

Better yet, focus on the rematch. It’s on, right?
