A draw for Cebu Execs, Argao team

The two-game match play between the Cebu Executives and Profession­als Chess Associatio­n (Cepca) and Argao Chess Club ended up to a draw as both teams scored 14 points each at the Argao Training Center last Sunday.

In the first game, Argao defeated Cepca 7.5 points to 6.5 points, but the oldest chess club in Cebu returned the favor in the next game scoring 7.5 to 6.5 to call it a draw.

Cepca president Engr. Jerry Maratas scored two wins over lawyer Jonathan Villegas as well as Alex Olis over Vic Cueme, Manuel Abucay over John Bingit, Darianne Vales against Olive Jane Cantil, and Caesar Fernandez against John Gabriel Gealon.

While scoring two wins for Argao Chess Club were Yves Fiel against Carlo Maraat, Ferdinand Arellano against Ruel Hortelano, Edwel Alesna on Eddie Flores, Percival Fiel over Vice dela Torre and Kenneth Quindala against Solon Bagalihog.

Scoring 1.5 points were Hector Villamora of Argao against Mario Bustillo of Cepca and Richard Ouano of Cepca against Jun Soria, while scoring a win the rest earned a point against each other.

Yves Fiel, on the other hand, swept all his opponents to win the 5-Round Blitz chess tournament held Saturday night.

Argao’s Edwel Alesna won second place with four points and Cepca’s Richard Ouano finished third with 3.5 points.

The event was supported by the Argao LGU, led by Mayor Stanley Caminero and councilors Venerando Villaflor, Jessa Mier, and Jonathan Villegas, and the Argao Sports Commission through its executive director George Albarracin and Argao Chess Club officers Percival Fiel, Vic Cueme, Victor Villamira, Julius Albina and Engr. Ferdinand Sarillana.

Cepca handed two chess clocks and chess sets to Argao Chess Club after the friendly match. /
