Is it time for Omega vs. ALA?

But if it’s Omega vs. ALA would the two camps’ TV partners spoil it before it could even be hatched? Omega has Who’s Next, which is aired over GMA, while ALA has Pinoy Pride, which is aired over ABS-CBN.

Just hours after watching Jeo Santisima batter Goodluck Mrema in just one round, undefeated boxer Jhack Tepora wrote a curious update in his Facebook account: Tepora vs. Santisima.

He deleted it after a few hours but replaced it with one that is still online and generating comments: Omega vs. ALA Promotions.

The first one that was deleted may seem a push for personal fame, but the second one involves the whole outfit, which might create some unnecessary rivalry of sorts.

ALA might scoff at Omega, what made you think you are at the same level as ours? But let’s go beyond that for a moment and think of what a Tepora vs. Santisima fight could mean.

It’s a welcome change for a sport that really needs new faces, new stars. It used to be that Pinoy prospects fatten their records with relative unknowns and with easy pickings from foreign shores so they could climb the world rankings and fight for a world title.

I’m not accusing the camps of Tepora and Santisima of doing that but they are on a similar path, where they improve their world standing without facing other Pinoy prospects.

That could change if Michael Aldeguer of ALA Promotions and Pio Castillo of Omega do agree on staging a fight. And what a fight it would be; I think it’s one that’s going to sell itself owing to the growing following among local fans the two have.

At 21, Jeo is three years younger than Jack and at 14-2 with 12 Kos, has less fight experience than the undefeated El Capitan, who boasts of a 20-0, 15-KO record.

But quality-wise, Jeo may have the edge as he has only fought three guys with more losses than wins, and all in his first five fights as a pro. Tepora has faced seven foes with losing records, while three others had double-digit losses.

Could this happen this year? I hope so. Aldeguer said that right now, they’re focused on Milan Melindo’s title defense, so any discussions for now would be for a card after that of Melindo’s
