PWDs seek hike in aid

-

Despite their disabilities, children continue to study while adults find ways to earn in the cities of Mandaue and Lapu-Lapu.

In line with the celebration of the 39th National Disability Prevention and Rehabilitation (NDPR) Week, persons with disabilities (PWDs) hoped that their financial assistance from their city governments will increase.

Mandaue and Lapu-Lapu held a kick-off program for the celebration of the 39th NDPR Week.

In Mandaue, a short parade was held after the flag ceremony in front of the Mandaue City Hall. An opening program followed at the City Sports and Cultural Complex at 9 a.m.

Department of Social Welfare and Development 7 Director Ma. Evelyn Macapobre gave the keynote speech.

During the event, PWD athletes who won in international competitions were acknowledged. Four sewing machines were turned over to Barangays Tabok, Cabancalan, Ibabao-Estancia and Pagsabungan.

Michael Allan Pielago, focal person of PWDs and senior citizens in Mandaue, said the 3,800 registered PWDs in the city each received P2,000 cash from the City Government yearly.

“We are hoping that there will be an increase. We would be glad if the financial assistance increases to P3,000,” said Pielago.

He said it will be a big help considering that most of the PWDs are jobless while some are trying their best to finish studies.

Celerina Bercero, 67, a resident in Sitio Cabildohan in Barangay Looc, has two grandchildren who are mute.

Bercero hopes that they will get the cash aid this year so they can use it for the studies of her grandchildren.

Esterlita Aller, 56, has a seven- year-old grandson who has autism and is studying in a special education school in Mandaue.

PWDs in Lapu-Lapu get P2,500 cash assistance every year.

According to the Lapu-Lapu Public Information Office, PWDs who need medical assistance may visit the City Social Welfare and Services Office.

In her speech, Lapu-Lapu City Mayor Paz Radaza said PWDs must be given the same privileges and rights as everyone else.

“I don’t want you to think that you are less fortunate for you may have a little less than what we have. I want all of you to be productive despite your differences,” said Radaza.
