Cebu musicians unite

- SAM COSTANILLA samcost@yahoo.com

SUCCESSFUL. It was a very successful gathering of several Cebuano musicians, band performers, solo singers and other local entertainers two Sundays ago. We converged at the Aznar beach resort in Talisay City where the organizers put up a very loud sound system and a combo set. It was our very first gathering, making it a historic event.

COMMENDABLE.

It was actually a getting-to-knowyou occasion among the local performers. All local musicians were given the chance to interact with each other. There was no talk of professional rivalry or jealousy, only friendly discussions and warm hugs.

HOPE.

It was Edgar Butalid of Auctioned Band Cebu that started the ball rolling. Those that I saw were some of Cebu’s veteran performers like Babyluz Condeno, Dos Compañeros comic duo of Franklin Padayogdog and Bobby Entienza, and dyAB broadcaster Jeffrey Astillo. I hope that kind of gathering would be institutionalized as a yearly event.

UNITY.

That particular occasion was a glowing display of unity among homegrown entertainers. I saw how happy they were as they exchanged stories about their respective bands and gigs here and there.

LEADERSHIP.

One thing is sure—all local musicians deserve a strong leadership. There should be someone that should take the lead in organizing a group of local performers. Maybe Butalid can.

DEADLINE.

Reminding all songwriters. August 30 is the deadline for the submission of your entries to next year’s Cebu Popular Music Festival. Entry forms are still available at the University of the Visayas President’s Office or Soundtraxx Production Studio. (For comments, text 0932-277-8771)
