RAMIREZ’S ‘TRIALS’
Former Medellin mayor’s counsel files several pleadings in court, including motions to quash the search warrant, to suppress evidence seized, for petition for bail
Former Medellin mayor Ricardo “Ricky” Ramirez wants Bogo City Regional Trial Court Judge Antonio Marigomen to determine whether there was probable cause to indict him for a string of criminal charges.
Ramirez’s counsel, Inocencio dela Cerna, filed several pleadings in court in a bid to dismiss the charges or allow his client to post bail.
The defense filed the motions to quash the search warrant; to suppress evidence seized; for judicial determination of probable cause; for petition for bail; and for judicial determination of probable cause for illegal possession of drugs paraphernalia.
Judge Marigomen ordered Ramirez detained at the Bureau of Jail and Management Penology in Medellin.
Cases for violation of Republic Act (RA) 10591 (Comprehensive Firearms and Ammunition Regulation Act) and Section 12 (illegal possession of drugs paraphernalia), Article II of RA 9165 or Comprehensive Dangerous Drugs Act were elevated to court after Ramirez chose not to undergo preliminary investigation
Assisted by his lawyer Dax Quijano, Ramirez, 53, appeared before Prosecutor Jerome Abarca for the inquest last week.
Ramirez told the prosecutor that he would just face the charges in court.
Operatives of the Provincial Intelligence Branch (PIB) arrested Ramirez through the strenght of a search warrant issued by Judge Jacinto Fajardo Jr.
Police recovered eight firearms, including two M16 armalite rifles; a sniper rifle; a .22 rifle, two air rifles, and one .45 pistol and several ammunition and magazines.
Of the eight firearms, only one was recorded before the Firearms and Explosives Office in Camp Crame, Quezon City.
A verification issued by Supt. Julius Egos Silgan, officer-in-charge of Camp Crame’s Firearms Licensing Division, showed thag Ramirez owns about 10 unlicensed firearms.
Abarca recommended no bail for Ramirez’s illegal possession of firearms and ammunition, and P40,000-bail for illegal possession of drugs paraphernalia.
