Fast thumbs and rejected calls

- LUIS A. QUIBRANZA III laquibranza@sunstar.com.ph

Dear millennials. That game you are now playing is a reincarnation of an older game title called Twin Bee.

You’re welcome. We’re talking about Everwing, a “shoot ‘em up” game that can be played on the Facebook Messenger mobile application. Everwing keeps things simple, simple enough that you can play it with one hand.

If you see a person who seems to be texting but his thumb is swiping crazy fast, don’t disturb him. Let him be or taste the post-game wrath.

Why is Everwing in most people’s gadgets these days? Here are three random reasons:

Bar-kada arcade 24/7

When one plays Everwing (anytime, anywhere for as long as he is connected to the internet), a good way to enjoy the game is to form a group on Messenger and play with a group of friends. Even before gaming consoles became popular for home use, arcades and bars used to have games that recorded top scores registered by those who played the games. Some of these guests would make sure that their names ended up on the “Top Score” list shown in the screen. Which brings us to the next point...

A ‘Rocky’ morning

One cannot continue to live life without seeing the first Rocky movie. This classic Sylvester Stallone flick is one of the best inspirational sports dramas ever made. There’s a scene when Stallone, who plays Rocky Balboa in the movie, goes through a rigorous exercise routine one morning.

Even though most of us will never become boxers, Everwing ignites a fire under those who play it as soon they get up in the morning. The game never fails to update you when a friend of yours has passed your score in the game. Some of these “friends” beat your score with a little “Good Morning” greeting too. So the moment you get up, you’re motivated into beating someone—through a game and not through 12 rounds of boxing.

It makes the Philippines a better place— temporarily

Hate the long lines in banks? Dislike the commute and hopeless about the traffic from Escario St. all the way to Banilad-Talamban? Playing Everwing serves as temporary therapy. But of course, needless to say, we’re not talking about those who actually drive a vehicle. This tip is strictly for passengers only. Time runs faster when you’re gaming.

At the end of the day, Everwing is but another casual distraction from all of the world’s noise. Albeit, a fun and safe experience. So the next time you try to call a friend twice in succession but the call gets rejected? You know what’s up.
