■ PINOYS SWEEP GOLD AND SILVER MEDALS IN SEAG TRIATHLON

PHL posts 1-2 finishes in men’s and women’s triathlon event in SEAG Huelgas wins men’s gold, while Kim Mangrobang rules women’s event In men’s football, Philippine­s suffers second straight loss Two more endurance athletes made their presence felt for Team PHL as they snagged two gold medals following the win of Cebuana marathoner Mary Joy Tabal in the 29th Southeast Asian (Sea) Games in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia.

Triathlete­s Nikko Huelgas and Kim Mangrobang gave Team PHL its third gold medal in the biennial meet after winning the men’s and women’s triathlon event at the Water Sport Complex in Putrajaya, Malaysia yesterday.

Huelgas clocked 1 hour, 59 minutes and 30 seconds in the 1.5-kilometer swim, 40K bike and 10K run race en route to claiming his second straight Sea Games gold medal.

Team PHL had a 1-2 finish in the men’s race as John Chicano came in 2:01:27 for the silver. Clement Chow of Singapore timed 2:03:24 to settle for third place.

It was a double victory for the country as the female triathlete­s also inked out a 1-2 finish thanks to Mangrobang and Ma. Claire Adorna.

Mangrobang improved from her silver medal in 2015 with a gold medal after clocking 2:11:14, dethroning her teammate Adorna who finished in 2:18:58 good for silver.

The bronze medal went to Irene Chong of Malaysia after clocking 2:25:44.

Meanwhile, the Philippine­s suffered its second straight loss, 4-0, to Vietnam in the men’s football event of the 2017 Southeast Asian Games (SEAG) in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia.

Nguyen Cong Phuong scored the opener in the 39th minute before Vu Van Thanh doubled the lead just before halftime with a goal in two minutes of added time. Vietnam continued where it left off in the second half with a 50th minute goal by Nguyen Van Toan. Ho Tuan Tai hit the back of the net in the 89th minute of the match for Vietnam’s final goal. /
