Zonta 1’s 50 years of service

- MILA C. ESPINA mcespinternational@yahoo.com

Yes, the Zonta Club of Cebu 1 celebrates its Golden Years of Service in 2018. Since its founding by the late Dr. Suga Sotto-Yuviengco in 1968, the pioneers continued the club’s long-term programs by committed past presidents and members.

Notable sustainable projects are the Day Centers in Ermita 1 and 2; the feeding projects in Capitol; the micro-financing and livelihood projects among the women of Budlaan; the Adopt-aSchool and Scholarship Program; establishing a center to tackle violence against women and children (after its initial venture in the Pink Center); linkages with the private and public agencies for value-oriented programs like P.E.O.P.L.E success stories and Talento Cebuano with the academe; and contributions in cash and kind to calamity survivors.

Lately, Zonta 1 acquired an action-based office to monitor projects better and expand management and information networking with the regional, national and International Zonta Clubs. Soon, the Zonta 1 coffee book, from its historical archives, will be released.

How did Zonta 1 sustain its long- and short-term programs? Aside from the yearly membership fees and donations, the group conducted fundraising projects every other term which established team building and the Zontians’ creative skills in event management and performing arts.

This year, the Zonta Club of Cebu 1 presents the family of Jose Mari Chan, in a concert this Nov. 23, 7 p.m., at the Pacific Ballroom, of Waterfront Cebu City Hotel. It will be a wholesome evening which will also feature local performers with a brief video of the history and projects of the Zonta Club 1. Any help we can get from friends and partners of our programs will be very helpful.

See you come November.
